Whipped cream makes me think of a few things – strawberries (and cream), cakes, pies… hardly foundation. Does the idea of light fluffy white moist cream bring to mind a beige coloured product you’d apply to your face as opposed to shovelling it into your tummy? I thought not!

But this is precisely what Revlon called their Colorstay Whipped Creme Makeup foundation.

Like a cream, it comes in a heavy glass jar which is really unique I thought. It might be why I picked up a tub the first time I saw it at the display shelves all those months ago. It was just too different to pass up! Wait, was this launched last year? Or perhaps early in 2013? I can’t remember anymore, but I can tell you that I’ve owned this one for a while and that I surprisingly like it!

If you’re a fan of full coverage foundation then I do believe this is one to check out. Whilst it gives full coverage, I wear it as a light-medium coverage foundation and it performs very well for me. Truly when it comes to pharmacy brand foundation, barring that error in judgement that was the Revlon Mousse foundation, I’ve thus far had nothing but success with Revlon.

The consistency of the product is quite unique. It isn’t a lotion nor a cream because it actually feels more dense, but it isn’t solid either. It actually feels (and looks!) like pudding.

Bouncy, wobbly milk chocolate pudding. Yum! 😀

It might be what whipped creme may look like after it’s been allowed to settle. It takes on a rather gooey consistency, which you will recognise in this Revlon foundation. Due to the texture, I found that the formula settles overnight, so you literally wake up to a brand new tub of foundation every day!

There is a white plastic stopper that you would be advised to keep. It just helps keep it cleaner because I found the product can be rather messy after a while. I cleaned it up a little for the photos but even then, you can see the thicker bits of foundation around the sides of the tub. Just clean it up occasionally and you’ll be fine.

The biggest challenge you will face is how to apply the Revlon Whipped Creme Makeup foundation. I experimented with this many times over the months and I’ve only just got it – about a year later! LOL So don’t fret if you are facing problems wondering how to get it to work, here’s your answer 😉

I found that because the texture is rather thick and the coverage so high, the best way for me to apply this foundation was with a flat topped brush. I use the Shiseido Perfect Foundation brush but you can use anything similar. The reason I found this type of brush performing the best, is because of the flat head and design that allows you to disperse product more evenly over a wider area, while allowing you to increase coverage with just dabbing product on. If you use a brush like the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush, I found that it was prone to be a bit more streaky and apply too heavy coverage. A flat brush just didn’t cut it, applying product far too thickly.

So here’s how I apply the Revlon Whipped Creme Foundation and the slight variations you can have:-

Doing it this way, I found that I achieved a very very thin layer of product on my skin which was more than sufficient to even out my skintone naturally. The foundation is rather heavy and spreads very well, and the coverage is very high, so if you put on too much product, you do risk looking a bit too made up especially in the daytime. A stippling brush actually gave me more coverage than I liked but it gives a lovely finish so use whichever method makes you happy.

Using the technique I outlined above, here’s how my skin looks before and after foundation.

The photos are unretouched so you can see how my skin does need a little help if I want to look a bit more presentable and less tired at work. With the thin layer of foundation, redness is covered, skin tone is evened out and the coverage is so good, even the pigmentation I have on cheeks is lightly covered.

This doesn’t give me as photoshopped a finish as the Laura Mercier Silk Creme foundation does, but once I dab on a touch of concealer or highlight, and a thin layer of my regular Guerlain Meteorites finishing powder, my skin looks as good as it can ever be 🙂 In fact, I usually skip the concealer with this foundation. Just layer on a touch more product, apply finishing powder (can’t live without my Meteorites!) and away I go! 😀

If you apply the product too thickly, you may find it feels a bit tacky and even may get oily through the day. So my advise is to go with just a tiny bit and build it up if you have to. It looks much better this way and it actually looks better as the day wears on. To its credit, it does stay on for hours pretty much in line with the rest of the Colorstay range. Doesn’t budge much, if at all! (I don’t have oily skin however. My skin is normal-dry)

The lightest colour we get is 220 Nude which as a swatch, actually looks a bit deep with pink undertones. I was quite worried when I tested it at the counter, because it just looked a bit dark for me. But I bought it anyway because it was the lightest shade available. The initial times I used it, I used too much so I did find the colour a bit dull on my skin. But in recent times, using just a touch of product, it’s been fine. Which is surprising, once you see how it compares to other foundations I use LOL! 😀

(1) Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Foundation 220 Nude (2) Revlon Colorstay Foundation Oily Combination Skin (3) Revlon Age Defying DNA Foundation Buff (4) Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation #51 Light Vanilla (5) Kanebo Lunasol Skin Modeling Liquid Foundation 010 (6) Shiseido Perfect Refining Foundation I00 Very Light Ivory

On days when I want something a little more full coverage, I’ve been reaching for this one. I think working out how to apply it has been the key determining factor in making up my mind if I liked it and I do. I like this a lot. The only thing I don’t like therefore is the packaging.

Whilst understandable, due to the texture of the product, the heavy bulky glass jar isn’t conducive for travel so it’s strictly a stay-at-home foundation. No holidays for you, Revlon Whipped Creme foundation!

In a nutshell

The Revlon Whipped Creme Makeup foundation is a lightly whipped cream foundation with a texture like pudding. It is a little tacky in feel so it is quite important not to use too much product because the coverage is very high and it can look too fake on skin. I found that the application technique is most important for this product, as you can risk applying too much and achieving a thick, cakey appearance. So, use only a tiny bit which goes very far, spread it out as much as you can because a little bit goes a long way, and you will find that it performs beautifully as a light-medium coverage foundation, evening out skin tone just right so it looks natural. I like this a lot for days when I want a little more coverage and when I want something that lasts all day. The bulky glass jar isn’t portable so you will need something else if you travel a lot. But if you don’t, then I think this is worth a go.

Pros: Long lasting natural finish, Looks better as the day wears on, A very little bit of product goes a very long way, Gives a flawless and natural appearance to skin if you use a thin layer

Cons: Glass jar packaging isn’t portable, A risk of using too much product, Too much product can feel tacky on skin and look cakey and thick, Colour match might be tricky

Who will like this: Anyone in the market for a high and full coverage foundation that is long lasting

Here is the ingredient list if you’re interested to know what’s in there

I do have to point out that I don’t wear this one all the time because I do find it a little too much. I like to play around with my foundations so on some days, I wear little to none, and on others, I go full on depending on where I have to be, and who I have to see. So I can’t tell you if it will clog pores with daily wear because I also thoroughly cleanse in the evening and I cannot stress that enough, if you wear makeup. Remove it all properly, and your skin will be fine.

It took me a while to work out that all I needed was only a little bit of product. Before this, I was on the fence about the shade and the tacky feeling. Worked out the kinks and it’s great now 😀

Paris B

Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Makeup foundation available locally in 6 shades with 220 Nude the lightest Price: RM69 (look out for sales) Availability: Revlon counters

Whipped cream makes me think of a few things – strawberries (and cream), cakes, pies… hardly foundation.
